Instead of starting knderground senior year in Chicago with her boyfriend, Matt, she was headed toward the Iron Curtain. She initially goes only to try and get in with Tomek, but once she is there – she falls in love, not only with him, but with his family and community.

The author did a great job of making the reader really understand what the people of Poland had to go through, and how they survived the opression. She becomes so fast that a competition arises between Eva and Lukasz to see who can get the most plums picked the dqley. Once I started getting into YA literature, I noticed a trend of first person narration and I learned to actually enjoy it. Eva Lott is feeling pretty good about life in general. But what I think the book’s real strength lies in Mackall’s ability to create interesting situations, and feelings — the relationships don’t feel like cliches, and the scenes are really beautiful.

His gaze seemed to take in the whole line, which was longer than when Eva and her dad had joined it.
